Sewer Line Locating in Suffolk County, NY - Find It Before You Dig
Adding a pool. Putting in a patio. Landscaping the backyard. Buying the house and not sure where anything runs underground. Sewer line locating tells you exactly where the pipe is before anyone breaks ground.
Suffolk Drain & Sewer provides professional underground sewer line locating for homeowners, contractors, and buyers across all of Suffolk County. We use electronic pipe locating equipment to trace buried lines and mark them accurately — so you know what's down there before excavation, renovation, or purchase.
What Is Sewer Line Locating — And Why Does It Matter?
Sewer line locating is the process of tracing the path and depth of underground drain and sewer pipes using electronic detection equipment. A small transmitter called a sonde, most commonly broadcasting at 512 Hz, is pushed into the line, and a receiver above ground detects and tracks that signal as it travels underground.
This isn't a rough guess. A properly done locate typically pinpoints horizontal position within a few inches, with depth readings accurate to roughly 10%. Effective detection range is usually 10 to 16 feet deep, depending on the equipment and soil conditions. 512 Hz is the industry-standard frequency because it penetrates soil more effectively and holds up better against interference from nearby metal pipes or electrical lines than higher frequencies.
On Long Island, this matters more than in most places. Because the vast majority of Suffolk County is unsewered, every property has a private sewer lateral running underground from the house to a cesspool or septic system. That line crosses the yard at an unknown depth, taking whatever path the installer chose decades ago. There are no maps, no marked easements, and no record in most cases.
Before any excavation — a pool installation, a patio, a shed foundation, a fence post, a landscaping project, an addition — knowing where the sewer line runs isn't optional. Accidentally cutting through a buried sewer lateral means sewage backup, an emergency repair, and excavation you weren't planning for.
Sewer line locating is also used before sewer repairs, so crews don't dig in the wrong place. Before cesspool abandonment, to confirm the system location. Before home purchase, so a buyer understands what's underground and where it goes. And when a homeowner simply doesn't know where any of it is — which is more common than you'd think on Long Island, especially for recent buyers of older homes.
When Sewer Line Locating Is the Right First Step
If any of these apply to your situation, locating the line before you proceed protects you from an expensive mistake.
Note: Sewer line locating is often combined with cesspool locating and sewer camera inspection when a homeowner needs a full picture of the underground system. If you're a new homeowner who doesn't know what's under the yard, we can locate, map, and inspect the full system in one visit.
Don't dig blind. Find out where the lines run first.

Step 1 — Access the Line
We access the sewer system through the cleanout, a drain opening, or another entry point. On properties where the cleanout is buried or unknown, we locate that first. A sonde (transmitter) is then inserted into the line.
Step 2 — Electronic Tracing
The sonde sends a signal through the pipe as it travels down the line. A receiver, such as a RIDGID SeekTech or NaviTrack locator, tracks that signal above ground, allowing us to walk the path of the pipe and mark its location at the surface with paint or flags. We note depth readings at key intervals.
Step 3 — Marking and Documentation
We mark the full path of the sewer line from the house to the cesspool or septic system, noting any bends, direction changes, and approximate depth. For excavation planning, we provide this information in a format contractors and permit applications can use.
Step 4 — Combined Services if Needed
If you also need a camera inspection of the line or want the cesspool located and inspected at the same visit, we can combine services. Many homeowners who have never had the underground system documented choose to do a full locate, camera, and cesspool inspection together.

We Know Long Island Underground Systems
On Long Island, sewer lines run to cesspools and septic systems — not municipal mains. We know how these systems were typically installed in different eras of Suffolk County construction, what pipe materials to expect at different depths, and how to interpret what the equipment is showing us in the context of Long Island soil and drainage conditions.
Full System Capability
We don't just locate. We can camera inspect, cesspool locate, and cesspool inspect in the same visit. If you're getting the sewer line located because you don't know what's under the yard, we can give you a complete picture of the underground system — not just one piece of it.
Serving Homeowners and Contractors
We work with homeowners planning renovations, general contractors doing excavation work, pool installers, landscaping crews, and real estate buyers who want underground system documentation before closing.

The Problem
A homeowner planning a new patio installation didn't know exactly where their sewer lateral ran and wanted to avoid accidentally digging into it during construction.
The Diagnosis
The connected technician fed a sonde-equipped camera into the line through the existing cleanout. As the sonde broadcast its position through the soil at 512 Hz, a handheld locator was used above ground to trace the signal, marking the line's exact path and depth on the surface within a few inches of accuracy.
The Fix
The homeowner received a marked-out line path before the patio contractor broke ground, avoiding any risk of cutting into the sewer lateral mid-project.
Reducing Recurrence
For any property without documented utility records — common with older Suffolk County homes — locating the line before any excavation, landscaping, or pool installation is a low-cost way to prevent a much more expensive accidental repair.

Costs vary by line length, depth, and soil conditions. This range is typical for Suffolk County and is not a quote. A free estimate from your connected professional will confirm exact pricing for your property.

Want a full picture of the underground system, not just the line's path? Pair this with a sewer camera inspection to see the pipe's actual condition, or a cesspool inspection if the cesspool itself also needs to be located and evaluated.
